Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Spanish to bright, motivated and talented students at a high-poverty school. They have been learning about Hispanic culture through language, cooking, singing, and dance lessons.
But given the demographics of our school, they have not had big exposure to diversity.
I'm working to introduce them to Hispanic culture through field trips and through my own experiences. I grew up in the Dominican Republic, and I frequently tell them about my life. I aim to greatly broaden their horizons.
My Project
We are planning a student Hispanic dance group where students will show their skills in Hispanic music and dance performances. We need the costumes that represent the colorful culture of the Hispanic community. Those will be used not just for this year but also in the future.
We want to give our high school student body exposure to the Hispanic culture while we promote unity and diversity.
Other students and parents will see our students showing their skills with the Spanish language and the acquisition of culture.
We're hoping to raise the funds to purchase costumes. Later we will try to get international flags that we can use in celebrations not just this year but in future years.
