Our classroom is full of bright, eager to learn students who regularly feel the effects of the poverty in which they live.
My students attend a Title I school where 58% of them are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, and many of them live with a single parent. They love to read and learn through the use of technology! I hope to inspire a love of learning as much as possible in the classroom to offset any socioeconomic stresses they may feel.
My Project
These materials will help the learners in my classroom daily. We do not currently have enough headphones for all students to use a pair at the same time, which makes engaging with computer science, our online math program, and using assistive technology difficult for a classroom of 30 children. We complete many coding activities in which students manipulate the sound on their computers to engage with various creations. Students later share these creations with their classmates and learn from each other, but initially, headphones are a necessity when all students need to hear how their program is running at the same time. Our school district also uses an interactive online math program that requires students to use headphones. Not having enough headphones in our class this year has lead to unnecessary distractions during critical learning time.
The flexible seating options in our classroom are well-loved and well-used.
Our current floor cushions have been sewn back together many times, but are no longer in repairable shape. Floor cushions are one of my students' favorite choices when working independently on projects, essays, assessments, etc. When students are able to choose a space to work in the classroom in which they can be the most successful, I see them take accountability for their learning, and I see them truly shine. Floor cushions have made this possible for students, as they can move these floor cushions easily, and work in a quiet nook or corner that best suits their needs. I would love to continue offering this flexible seating option for my students, but our current floor cushions that have been in my room for the last 4 years are now beyond repair.
