I teach high school students at an underserved public school that believes that students come first. These students are from the surrounding neighborhood. Despite the obstacles that many of them have at home, my students come to school mentally prepared to learn.
The culture my students have built fosters one of learning and seeking more knowledge.
When my students walk into our school and my classroom, they know that they can leave the burdens of their home and social lives at the door. If they are hungry, we will feed them. If they don't have clothes, we will dress them. If they don't have supplies, we will supply them. We want our students' only concern to be education, without worrying about the drugs, violence, and stress of the surrounding environment.
How many times did you as a student forget to bring a pen or your notebook? Do you know how often students can't afford additional school supplies for class? Scholars work hard in the classroom and just need consistency and engaging lessons, activities and books.
This year students will do more project based learning which involves students analyzing text, arguing a point and presenting ideas to their classmates.
Students need basic classroom supplies like pens, highlighters, tape and paper to both prepare for these projects and present them to their peers. Other examples of the activities students are engaged which will require these supplies are are historic timelines that correspond to the novel they are reading, a plot diagram, creating newspapers, book jackets and magazines about author's. All these projects require the materials that I am requesting including paper clips, pens, scissors, markers, and more paper.
Your donations will make it possible for my students to continues to enjoy and demonstrate their learning with creative projects.
Our students are constantly doing hands-on projects that require general school supplies. It is imperative that our scholars understand and enjoy the experience of learning.
