My students need supplies! The most exciting items are shiny, new (and working!) headphones! We use technology in our classroom EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. and working headphones, that students don't have to provide, is key!
I know that as we have entered a world where minimum wage doesn't cut it, we have also entered a world of hurt for children who don't deserve it. My students are not the exception to this - they do the best they can with what they have. Unfortunately, what they have isn't always cutting it - no help at home, no one to check their homework, no one to answer a reading comprehension question, and definitely no one to buy them supplies if something gets broken, goes missing, or is just something a little extra that would help tremendously. I want to do all that I can in all of those departments to fill the void in these children's lives. They truly, truly deserve the best learning environment I can give.
My Project
I have never had a second thought about getting my students the things they need for success in my classroom, but that isn't always easy! When your students come from low-income areas, they do what they can with what they have, but that doesn't cut it for me. I want to see my students not only "get by," but truly feel that they are given equal opportunity.
I never want my students to feel unsuccessful because they don't have a pencil.
There are many, many distractions and factors that effect a student's performance in the classroom, but essential supplies will never be one of them. Some of the most basic supplies such as clipboards so students can move around and complete work, headphones to hear the audio of the novel we are reading, file folders to keep their work safe, or dry erase markers to teach a new lesson can truly change the environment and attitude inside of our classroom.
