My students need supplies for creatively expressing their learning. Creative expression helps students show their learning process and helps me, as a teacher, understand where they may be struggling without them having to verbalize their inadequacies.
Our school is a Title I school with students from all ethnic backgrounds. The majority receive free and reduced lunch. We serve English Language Learners, those with diagnosed disabilities including autism, attention deficit hyper activity disorders, and emotionally behaviorally disabled to name a few. A large number of our students are the children of migrant workers so the transient population is important to reach while we have them in our classrooms. To many of our students, this is the one constant in their lives for food, moral support, and understanding. We have a team of dedicated individuals who support these students on a daily basis through Positive Behavior Support. Individual conferences with students happen on a regular basis to determine needs outside of the school day. Despite many difficulties, including homelessness, our students come to school with smiles on their faces and a readiness to learn. Education for them is a way to a better life.
My Project
Students need to be creative, using markers and paper to express themselves and their ideas. Being able to be colorful and release their feelings helps them push forward into their learning space. Ideas can be expressed and shared with no constraints and less struggle than completing a worksheet that is someone else’s idea of expression. Mental health has been a huge issue, especially in the students who I teach because they come from a difficult environment. Some may not feel comfortable verbally expressing their struggles and learning, but with these supplies it will be easier to help them do this.
