We have such a diverse group of kids at my school. They are from all different backgrounds and from different socioeconomic levels. We have gifted kids and kids with special needs.
I work directly with students in many grades who struggle with reading and math and who need some extra help to get caught up.
I work all day with small groups of kids on reading and math skills. Many of my students are English Language Learners. They all have something in common. They all love to learn. They also love reading new books and experiencing new things.
My Project
Right before school starts, we have two assess and connect days for our students. On those days, families come in to meet their teacher. Students do some quick assessments with teachers and get introduced to their classrooms. Parents are able to go to one room and do all necessary paperwork, sign up for after school programs, get information on programs the school offers and other tasks. This is also the time that students can bring their school supplies into the classroom.
This coming school year, we want to have backpacks filled with school supplies available for families who can't afford them.
This proposal includes four backpacks and the basic supplies that students will need to fill the backpacks. Before the assess and connect day, my teaching partner and I will assemble several backpacks with needed supplies. Some of the them will be themed for primary students, some for the older kids. They will be nice, new, fun packs and supplies the kids can be proud of. If a classroom teacher has a student come with no supplies, they can come to us for a new filled backpack!
They will have new crayons, colored pencils, pencils, scissors and pencil boxes. In addition they will also get a pair of headphones or earbuds. These are often an item that is overlooked, but much needed. Thank you so much for supporting the students at our school! They deserve the best!
