Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Southside Primary School is a PreK-2nd grade campus located in Cleveland, Texas. Cleveland ISD is a Title I school district. In December, upon initiation by the Southside principal, the district approved for a new position to open at our campus for a special education teacher, emphasizing in autism intervention. In January, Cleveland ISD hired me to work as their very first special education teacher who works solely with students with autism.
I teach 18 students diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.
Autism is a spectrum of disorders with great variation amongst individuals. Therefore, each of my 18 students have very unique skills and deficits and require a different approach from one another.
As the autism intervention teacher, my goal is to instill hope and knowledge in my students, as well as guide them toward achieving their maximum potential.
My Project
Each of my students have unique needs. During the school day they are working hard in their classrooms along with other students (with and without autism). When I work with my students with autism, they need a place to desensitize. As opposed to a general education classroom, the goal of my autism intervention classroom is to give my students, during this critical development time in their lives, a sensory break each day.
By funding this project, you will transform my classroom into an area where students with autism can thrive.
You may notice that a lot of my items are for the classroom. Prior to my arrival, my classroom was a teacher's workroom. This is the first autism classroom at Southside and my first year teaching, so there are a lot of tools necessary to transform my room into a motivational and successful work environment for students with autism. While I have utilized my personal resources and my school's resources, I need your help to make this classroom everything that I know it can be for my students with autism.
My goal is to create a warm, comfortable, and inviting environment where my students WANT to be. In order to do this, I will use the bean bag, weighted blanket, and pillows for a sensory release area. Students with autism often have difficulty processing sensory input; weighted blankets have been proven to help individuals with autism decompress. The rug will be used to cover the cold tile in my classroom, giving my students a comfortable area to sit and walk on. The additional supplies will be used to make my classroom organized and functional. For example, my project consists of 18 storage cubes-- one for each student's supplies, along with a storage unit for the cubes.
