Every day my students work hard to be the best learners they can be. My goal is for each student in my program to learn new skills to allow them to become as self-sufficient as possible and to be prepared for life after high school. "The quality of life is more important than life itself."
Students in the Life Skills program are learners with disabilities, such as Down Syndrome and Autism.
These students are the hardest working group of kids I've ever met. They work on academic skills, such a writing and money skills, as well as life skills and vocational skills that will prepare them for adulthood. I am fortunate enough to run the Life Skills program in a school that's culture is incredibly inclusive and accepting. It amazes me everyday to see the opportunities that are provided to my students to allow them to have a deep connection with the school environment and their typical peers.
My Project
We are looking to enhance the vocational component of the Life Skills program. The students will be opening up a coffee shop for teachers and staff as a component of our math class, as well as run a gift wrapping service for our high school staff. The goal of this program is to allow the students to gain authentic vocational skills within the school environment. The coffee shop with provide a students with an opportunity to gain interpersonal skills through communication with customers, money management through the purchasing and banking component of the coffee shop, as well as learn to share a work space and the responsibilities of running a business. An inventory and purchasing component of the business will be taught, as well.
Being provided with donations to get our coffee shop up and running with improve the vocational component of the Life Skills program and allow students a hands-on opportunity to gain workplace knowledge that will benefit them, long term.
