Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten class is full of 25 sweet, curious, eager learners! They come to school every day with big smiles on their faces as they head to their tables for morning work. They love to read books, write about their ideas, count, build, and play!
We are a Title I school with a high percentage of English learners.
Our class is an incredibly diverse group of students, who come from many different backgrounds, languages, and cultures. About half of my students speak a language other than English at home, and for some, this is their first experience in school. It is amazing to see how quickly their confidence grows as they learn about their classroom, interact with their peers, and practice their language skills.
I am constantly impressed by the immediate acceptance and kindness my students show each other, regardless of differences.
They are quick to help a friend who is sad by giving them a hug, they cheer their classmates on when they get a special reward, and they celebrate with silent applause when a friend learns a new skill. They are super excited by every new opportunity to play, create, and learn together!
My Project
The beginning of kindergarten is the start of a lifelong educational journey for many students. I want to ensure that my students have the necessary supplies to be prepared for success right from the start of the year. The beginning of the year should be about getting to know each other, becoming comfortable in the school environment, and having fun learning new skills like letters and counting, and not worrying about having basic school supplies.
The pencil boxes, scissors, glue sticks, and crayons will ensure that each child in my class begins kindergarten ready to learn with his or her own tool box full of supplies.
We will use these tools for drawing, cutting, and pasting activities as my students learn to communicate their ideas, and practice basic academic skills. My kindergarten class will be so excited to use their new supplies as they begin their learning journey!
