I have the privilege to teach some wonderful 6th grade students math this year. I have five regular math classes and one intensive class at the moment. Although our curriculum is math I strive to teach "the whole child" having our classroom "teach peace" (which stands for participation, empathy, accountability, commitment, and empower). Our students are from a low socioeconomic area of our district and our school is a title one school.
My students have so much potential in them and I strive to help them reach their full capacity, turning them into the leaders of tomorrow.
There is so much growth that will happen at this age and our students encourage each other to succeed. I feel that I will learn just as much from them as they will learn from me.
My Project
School supplies are a necessary item for success in school; however, they are not always able to be purchased by the families in my school. These classroom supplies will allow for all students to be on equal playing fields where no student feels left out or embarrassed. Our classroom uses whiteboards in order to all interact with quick response and practice problems. Using the write and flip allows for all students to show an answer and not be scared of giving the incorrect answer or not completing the problem because it only shows the teacher where they are. Boards also allow for a surface that is reusable rather than paper that would be thrown away. We also do interactive notebooks which allow the students to show creativity with producing a personalized book of practice (vocabulary and problems) to reference later.
