My Students
Every day, my students ask "Miss, what are we doing today?" and the usual response is "Learning!" followed by groans and eye-rolling. My students come from low-income households and receive free breakfast and lunch in school. Often, schoolwork isn't their primary focus, and it can be hard to motivate them to take their learning seriously. As part of my practice, I try to bring creative and challenging research projects to the classroom, in order to advance their learning and inquiry about the world around them.
My Project
My students struggle with basic organization of their school supplies once they leave this classroom. Giving them folders, notebooks, and pencils in class reduce the excuses for incomplete work. In my room, students all start out with a fair playing field by getting assigned a folder full of the supplies they need to succeed in my classroom. These supplies stay in the room where they are safe and organized so students can build confidence in their learning and better habits. With the supplies they need, my students can take on difficult assignments and complete complex projects in order to graduate on time. Every day the students need a notebook and folder to organizer their notes and homework, and are often in need of pencils/pens to complete this work. We are also requesting basic supplies such as a new stapler, tape dispenser, white-out, and index cards because we utilize them so much that we run out of them quickly or they are broken. Lastly we are requesting basic cleaning items like paper towels, tissues, and hand sanitizer to keep us healthy throughout the year.
