My students need start up supplies at the beginning of the year, such as markers, crayons, pencils, erasers, folders, and colored pencils, so they can feel successful right from the beginning.
My students are hungry, not only for food but for the learning they receive from our classroom. I teach science and math to 5th grade students. We do a lot of hands-on learning and with out the right creative materials for my students they are not able to be their creative selves.
My students come from varying backgrounds.
Some come from middle to upper class families that support education and their child, some come from families that do not have much but still work hard to support their children. I also have some students who come from families that can not support the education of their child due to lack of experiences and finances.
Our school is very similar to what I see in my classroom. Some students come to school hungry, unclean and some very tired from a lack of appropriate sleep. Some students come to school ready to learn.
My Project
These resources that I am requesting will help all my students complete projects that I assign them. For some of them, they do not have the resources at home to complete a project. For example, if I sent home a poster project for them to complete in science 50-60% of my students will not be able to complete the assignment to full requirements. My students need start up supplies at the beginning of the year, such as markers, crayons, pencils, erasers, folders, and colored pencils so they can feel successful right from the beginning. These resources will be able to be signed out and taken home to use to complete a project or homework assignment. These resources will also help my students feel like they can be successful when they walk in the first day. We request supplies from families but not all parents can fill those requests so having extra supplies already in the classroom will help some feel like they have the same rate of success as the students who can bring in supplies.
