What I love most about teaching is seeing a student go from "I'm not good at this" and "This doesn't matter" to "This isn't that hard!" and "I think I can do it!"
Most of the time, all that a student needs to succeed is a little support and a teacher that genuinely cares.
In my internship last year, I had a student who was taking ninth-grade English for the THIRD time. He rarely came to class or did any work. When I first taught his class, I asked if he needed help, he told me "no," but surprisingly began working. The next class, he called me over to ask if he was doing his classwork correctly, and he finished it on time. I told him, "If you keep coming to class and doing your work, you definitely will pass this class!" His face lit up, he kept coming to class, even stayed after school, made up missed work, and asked me about college. His grade went from a 30% to an 85%! I'll remember his story whe own first class of students, knowing the impact that one teacher can have on a student's
My Project
New teachers are put at a disadvantage because they can't obtain all the student materials, organizational supplies, and educational decor that facilitate student learning. This puts their students at a disadvantage too.
As a new teacher, I want my 11th-graders to come into a classroom welcomed with educational and inspirational decor, the materials they need, and an organized teacher!
I've chosen student supplies that my department doesn't provide, including colored pencils, highlighters, scissors, and glue sticks that will allow students to engage in creative activities in my English class.
Additionally, some of the educational decor I selected will not just prevent my students from walking into a classroom with bland walls. It will offer my students quick reference guides to help with classwork, such as the "traits of good writing bulletin board." To encourage my students to consider different perspectives in the classroom, I will use the burlap banner to display the words "Open your mind before the door." When students enter my classroom, this wall decor will inspire them to learn and grow as people, especially if they read my favorite Harry Potter quote posted on the wall: "It is our choices that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -Albus Dumbledore
