I'm a New York City teacher in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. I teach 1st grade in P.S./I.S. 323. It is very hard for our school to get supplies because we are a Title One school in a low-income area. About 98 percent of our students receive free lunch. As a teacher, I feel we need more supplies in our school in order to keep our children wanting to come to school and to learn more. First grade is the beginning of our students' learning career. Without proper materials, it is hard for these students to get the education they need to succeed in future grades. They must have this background knowledge in order to take successful steps on the rest of their educational path. Because first grade is not a testing grade and the majority of our system's funding goes toward testing grades to help students achieve higher scores, we tend to get the smallest piece of the funding pie. I think it would be great for the children to experience things they never saw before. Math materials, books, writing centers, etc are some of the supplies I need most to help my students improve in reading, math and writing. These materials will help me enormously because they will let me teach more projects and creative activities to my students. It would be so great for the children to have all the new materials they need. Thank you for considering this proposal!
