This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
We are starting our school year virtually which is very challenging for my students. They need hands-on activities, structure and routine throughout their day. They struggle with attending to live class sessions so we can only have a few short sessions every day. In order to make virtual learning more accessible for my students, I want them to have more materials to use throughout the day at home.
This project will provide activities for students to use at home during virtual learning to help with task focus and attention while learning basic skills.
I have materials to send home with students on a rotating basis which means they will keep them at home to use for a couple weeks and then I will switch them out with new activities. This helps students practice similar skills but to generalize those skills by using a variety of objects. Since all the materials going home need to be sanitized upon return, I would love to have more activities in the rotation to go home.
Students will work on fine motor skills, matching, sorting, colors, shapes, task focus and staying on task using the materials from this project. These activities will also be used during individual sessions with students. During this challenging time of virtual learning, I am so glad students will be able to have activities to use at home.
