Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Speech and Debate is an activity that is often dominated by schools from affluent areas. Give our students the opportunity to compete in an academically challenging arena that will only further their preparation for college and their careers.
Our students are from a community where about 35% of the people live at or below the poverty level.
Many of our students have several siblings, and parents do not always have steady income. All of our students receive free lunch in our public schools. Only 15% of the population has a college degree. Despite this, our students crave the opportunity to learn and compete in academic events that will further their opportunities to attend college and achieve their life goals. Our students continually look forward to being able to interact with individuals from within and outside of their community. They are dedicated to speech and debate and work hard individually and as a team to further the success of every person.
My Project
Our students have been working with materials that have been handed down since the early 1990s. For example, some of the storage tubs they use have been used since 1992. Some of the storage bins are cracked/broken and simply need to be replaced. Also, our campus (like others) restricts the number of copies that can be used. Speech and Debate is an activity that requires a lot of printing and evidence. While the USB storage drives will help alleviate the amount of copies we make, a hard copy of all evidence must still be available upon request at each tournament we go to. Our students will also use pens, post its, legal pads, timers, and portfolios during practice and during the speech and debate competitions. They will no longer rely on hand me downs and will be able to have clearly labeled and filed evidence available to them. Without these supplies, preparation is nearly impossible and competition merely a dream.
