When asked to describe my students I have to say that they are the best and the brightest. I could go down the road of their challenges, economically disadvantaged, minority, recent immigrants learning English, Refugees, etc but I'm sure that the type of person who donates to support education is aware of the problems our young people face today. What I want to share is that in spite of the enormous challenges these students face, they are amazing. They adapt, they overcome, they pour their hearts into their assignments. They do it when they are hungry, they do it when they have no heat at home, they do it when they have been awake all night after experiencing gang violence, they get up, face the world and take care of business. They are remarkable human beings and I love them.
My Project
This "project" is really just my attempt to get enough supplies to properly run my program this year. My students are in a lower economic region competing with students from some of the best-funded schools in the state for scholarship money. So while my students need to win that money the most, they have the least chance because the supplies they have to work with are so limited. Most the materials I ordered are for my sculpture class so they can try other forms of sculpture beside paper mache. I know that if my students had access to the same resources, that they would truly shine.
