My students are 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with a range of high-incidence disabilities. More than 80% of them qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school. Many of them come from single parent households, foster care, or other unfortunate circumstances.
Although many of these students do not have ideal home lives, they do have positive attitudes and bright outlooks on life, and that is what keeps me going each day.
They come to school eager to learn and happy to be there. I believe that a great teacher can make learning fun and inspire them to reach their full potential, regardless of their natural drive or educational support outside of school.
These students struggle in many academic areas. Learning content in the general education is difficult for them. They are given the opportunity to come to my room to learn the material in a smaller and quieter setting and with more support and differentiation.
My Project
My students need basic school supplies in my special education classroom. Each student brings supplies at the beginning of the year, but the supplies stay in the general education classroom. There are many times when we want to express our creativity in my classroom and are unable to do so due to the lack of basic supplies.
With my role as a resource special education teacher and managing Tier 3 at G.
Elementary School, my classroom budget of $150 does not get me very far with the 40+ students in and out of my room each day. I typically put in a large order at the beginning of the school year, but by winter break, we are running low. Students lose instructional time running back to their classrooms for supplies, and I end up spending much of my personal money replenishing pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters, etc.
These materials will improve my classroom by giving the students the essential supplies they need to complete their school assignments and express their creativity in their special education classroom.
