Help me give my students Crayola crayons, markers, and colored pencils, Post-it Easel Pads, Elmer's glue sticks, and pencils to be creative while learning and to create classroom anchor charts to reference for future learning.
I started teaching at this school less than a week ago. I entered a 5th grade class where two teachers had already quit. The kids had been left with subs for the majority of the year. The class was falling apart from the ceiling to the floor and the students have less than enough materials to share. I can't even provide them with basic support like sharpened pencils because the school could not afford supplies for teachers. It's hard for me to understand how my students have achieved so much with so little. With actually, next to nothing.
The students are constantly seeking to be better than their circumstances and don't notice the things they don't have because they are full of hope for their future.
They are kind, funny, patient, and full of hope. My students have managed to become excellent writers. They enjoy having discussions about their history text, as well as exploring new ideas in science.
The reality is our families don't always have the means to provide us with school supplies. Our school doesn't always have the budget and our teachers simply don't make enough to provide for our class and their families.
If this was a survey I would check my children exceed expectations. Against all odds these students strive to grow behaviorally and academically every day. With guidance and support they will achieve great things!
My Project
The students will use these supplies in class each day to bring their journal entries to life.
They will use the Crayola crayons and color pencils to add color to moon phases and label seasons.
They will create replicas of the Earth's geography and use color to distinguish between the water, trees, and other landforms. The Post-it Easel Sticky Pads will literally make learning stick. Students will use the Post-it Easel Pads and the Crayola markers to create anchor charts that will be posted on the walls as class decorations and reference later for learning. I will use the Expo dry erase markers daily to teach new material and the Expo Whiteboard Care to keep the white board neat and clean so students can read from the board easily each day.
These supplies will provide students with the opportunity to create their own learning experience and participate in their learning in a way that is engaging and fun. The materials posted around our classroom will be made by students, providing them with a sense of ownership over their learning and accountability for their success.
We are not asking for much, however, these supplies are the minimum requirement for success. By providing these basic supplies, you will help these students achieve extraordinary results.
