My Students

My students come from all over the world. They have different socioeconomic backgrounds and their home lives are as diverse as their tastes in music. For some, their educational backgrounds are fraught with disruption and turmoil, while others have been honors students since they were in fifth grade.

The unique diversity of my students' learning styles and language needs make having specialized resources available in the classroom imperative to their success.

Daily, students work individually and in groups to analyze fiction and non-fiction class texts, including a mixture of classic and contemporary literature. In order to make these texts as accessible as possible to our diverse learners, we utilize as many modalities as possible.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to engage in the learning process in a hands-on way. The chart paper, markers, and colored pencils are used for multiple creative endeavors, specifically a hands-on group character analysis project. Students are provided with a blank body on the chart paper that they must fill in with the character's beliefs, ambitions, motivations, and other characteristics. Students visually represent these things, among others, through the head, heart backbone, etc. of the character's body in order to demonstrate their understanding of characterization. This hands-on, visual character analysis engages students who are typically non-participants in class discussions and analysis because it allows them the opportunity to express their ideas in a creative, non-verbal way. The drawing aspect of this project, provided through the chart paper and markers, makes students who usually withdraw into themselves, more comfortable to share their thoughts with peers, allowing them to feel successful in new and exciting ways.

Donations to this project will also allow my students to learn active reading skills through annotation.

The highlighters and sticky notes will allow students to annotate texts as we read. The highlighters are good for annotating multiple concepts since I can provide students with multiple colors. The sticky notes are especially helpful for annotating the class novels as we read since students can not write or highlight the books since they do not keep them. The sticky notes offer the best solution since they are easily disposed of after the unit is complete. My students who annotate their texts as we read have much better success on their written assessments and longer process piece assignments since they have their notes to go back to later on.
