We are an integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) first-grade class, with a mixture of general and special education students at a large high-needs, Title I school in the Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with; they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
We desperately need ink cartridges. Due to their unquenchable hunger for learning, I create materials on my computer for every single day of class because although the curriculum is a great guide, the students simply don't have enough materials for independent practice, which is something my students not only do well... but also need and crave. I make several math worksheets for each day, design expanded phonics practice for those who need it, and most of all, design reading comprehension materials. My students love reading comprehension lessons more than any else, and at the age of six, they are successfully learning how to summarize, sequence, predict, and make personal connections.
We require size D batteries in order to utilize the brand new listening center we recently received.
Right now, it cannot be used because it requires batteries. We also need plastic zip pouches to store and organize the materials in our listening center so children can retrieve the books and CD.
A new trend in our classroom is flexible seating. We want soft seats to allow students to move around the classroom to work during reading and writing workshop. When students have the flexibility to move around the room, they are able to focus on tasks better. The dry erase markers are used daily to informally assess student learning and give students a chance to practice what is being taught.
