This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My fourth grade students are in a school located in the highest poverty area in Flint, Michigan. 100% of our school gets free breakfast and free lunch. They are the first generation truly affected by the Flint water crisis. These students have little to no access to any reading material or technology at home. Our school does not have a school library at this time. These kids are bright and energetic and come to school ready to learn every day thanks to our school doing amazing things for the kids in our neighborhood every day.
My Project
My students live in the highest poverty are of Flint, MI, a city ravaged by a major water crisis. 100% of our school is free lunch and breakfast. Mot of our students families are struggling to provide basic living needs. This means items like paper, pencils, erasers and glue are very low on the priority list next to food, electricity and water. Our school is wonderful and provides everything they can to struggling families. They provide food bags to families every week, uniforms to those in need, tutoring programs, wonderful textbooks and much more. Sadly, there is just not enough funding to go around. By this time in the year, 3/4 of classes are out of paper, pencils, erasers and other basic supplies. These items are essential to learning and helping children gain the skills necessary to excel in everything. I do not want my students to worry about how they are going to write and, instead, would like to be able to say, "Need a pencil? Take one." Please help our students meet the potential they have stored inside by helping them have one less worry and providing them with basic supplies.
