My students need accessible materials to help them be successful in school! I’m requesting hook and loop adhesive dots, pencils, erasers, pens, and highlighters.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a public charter school, serving 900 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, who live in and around rural, northeastern, North Carolina.
Our middle school started in 2001 and expanded to include a high school in 2005.
Our student body is 85% African-American, with 85% being eligible for free/reduced-price lunch. In 2002-03, we were named the sixth highest performing school in the entire state of NC, out of 2,219 schools.
By 2005, 97% of our students were performing at or above grade level, according to NC state tests, and from 2009-11, 100% of our high school seniors were accepted to college. 85% of these students will be first generation college graduates. In 2010, our school was named "One of the Best" high schools in America by Newsweek magazine. Our students are guided by the philosophy that "we learn not for school, but for life." We believe education is the most powerful weapon we have to fight for social justice.
My Project
We are in need of some basic classroom supplies to use in our room for daily work. These materials include hook & loop adhesive dots, pencils, erasers, pens, and highlighters which the students will use daily in their classrooms.
Every year I have several families that are displaced because of all sorts of obstacles that they face.
Kids from these families show up on the first day of school with nothing at all. They are worried about food and shelter; therefore, school supplies are the farthest thing from their mind. Every child deserves to feel special because they have what they want to become successful.
Having these supplies will ensure that students will be able to have their own supplies to use during classes and are focused on learning rather than being embarrassed that their peers have the necessary supplies and they don’t have even a basic pencil to begin with. Please help them out so that they can feel empowered. If these students succeed in school, then we will be able to break the cycle of poverty.
