My second grade students face many challenges. As members of an inner-city school community, several have socio-economic struggles, speak different languages at home, have experienced some form of trauma and many struggle academically for a myriad of reasons.
Despite these hardships, these kind, hardworking students come to school striving for improvement.
They begin each day with a smile and stories of the time we've spent away from school. They cheer each other on and celebrate successes together. Many make an effort to be leaders in the classroom.
My Project
All students need supplies. My class is no different. Ensuring that all students have access to the same supplies is crucial for everyday lessons in our classroom. With a notebook and folder for each student, I can help organize students' response to reading activities.
I teach my students not to fear making mistakes.
In a classroom where mistakes are utilized as a learning tool, erasers need to be at-the-ready. I want them to be comfortable taking risks, so having an ample supply of pencils and erasers can help symbolize that for students.Without pencils and a way to sharpen them, students cannot complete written assignments.
My young students love to make colorful displays of their learning. Providing crayons, markers, and paper for each student will help ensure that they all have the same opportunity to be creative.
Helping my students obtain the same supplies will help even the playing field for all. When we don't have to worry about basic supplies, we can really get down to the business of learning in second grade!
