Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a vocational high school in an impoverished urban district. We have amazing students, whose dedication to learning and plying their trades blows me away more and more every year. By senior year, our kids are leaving the school building and working out in the community in jobs related to their chosen shops. Our Allied Health kids work in a local retirement home; our graphic design students design and create products for businesses throughout the city; and our construction-related shops have even worked on city projects, helping to build and remodel houses and even municipal buildings!
Academic success is just as important to our program but unfortunately, we have very limited funds to support that success.
Many of my students live below the poverty line and are genuinely unable to purchase all the necessary supplies for school. When other students notice their lack of materials, it can be extremely demoralizing and alienating, so I do my best to quietly provide these materials for them but I could really use some help!
My Project
These supplies will help me keep my classroom well-stocked for students throughout the year. I have been buying most of these materials with my own money for years now but I often run out and simply cannot afford to buy more. More importantly, this year, I would really like to be able to purchase a classroom set of headphones for use with the educational videos that I use regularly.
As surprising as it may sound, I still have a handful of students who don't have headphones or earbuds and that can create a lot of chaos in the room when every student is watching a video!
Having a classroom set of them would allow me to continue using videos, without all the disjointed noise distracting other students.
