Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at MES, a Title I school in Plano ISD, which means most students don't come in with a lot of supplies or much of anything. I provide most of the supplies for my students. Most students can't afford notebooks, pencils, folders, etc. I usually am the teacher during the summer who clears out the aisles at Walmart, getting all the supplies for my kids, but this year was different. My students, this year, are learning at home. If they are not able to get supplies to bring to school, I wondered how they were going to get supplies to complete work at home.
I used all the back up supplies I had in my classroom and made bags for my students so they would have supplies.
Now, after 18 weeks in school my students in my classroom are saying they are having difficulty completing practice assignments at home because of lack of supplies and resources. I want to help them be the most successful they can be, but they need the supplies to be able to be successful.
My Project
During this difficult year, my students are having to stay at home. With that being said, my students also attend a Title I school, which means they do not have a lot of access to funds to get the supplies they need.
For the past few years, I was the teacher who blocked off all the aisles at Target and Walmart, stacking up on notebooks and folders so my students wouldn't do without in the classroom.
This year, I have used all my back up supplies to get my students what they have needed.
Now that I am half through the semester, I have exhausted all my of back up supplies (also donating a lot of it to teachers who have students in there room, especially since they can't share!) My students now need supplies for the remainder of the school so they can be successful at home. Notebooks will help them keep organized. Pencils, well because they need pencils. Crayons so they can complete work and make it their own, like they would in class. All of the supplies listed is to help my students feel like they are in a normal classroom, even though they are online. Any donations will be much appreciated!
