I teach a very diverse group of kids in an independent research class. Students try to solve real world problems by creating products and conducting original research. It's a lot of fun because their topics range from interstellar space travel to the correlation between stress and academic performance to serial killers. I learn a lot from them every year and I am never bored.
These students love being challenged, so they often choose topics that have them conducting surveys, using a 3D printer, or working in labs.
It's an opportunity that keeps on giving because they often develop lasting working relationships with professionals in their chosen research field. With these contacts, the students often obtain internships and recommendations that really set them a part from others. I am so grateful for what these kids have taught me.
My Project
My research class is very unique in that each student has a different topic they have chosen. Because of the variety of topics, I must have a plethora of supplies for their use, so I try very hard to have all types of supplies at their disposal, even items that may be intended for a younger group of students.
I have a class printer that is specifically for the students to print anything they need for my class, or even other classes.
Many of them do not have access to a printer at home, so this helps them a lot.
The Osmo is a cool tool to help the students in class whose projects are focused on researching technology for elementary students. Every year, I have a few kids who research this topic and design products around something similar, so it would be helpful to have this tool to use as a model.
