My wonderful students are working very hard at home to stay connected to their learning! I am in awe of their grit and determination to continue learning, even when our physical school building is closed. We've been working in creative ways to stay connected - Facebook, Seesaw, phone calls, e-mail, distance learning packets, handing out meals, and doing home drop offs.
My students left school on a Friday afternoon with plans to return on Monday, only to receive a notification over the weekend that school would be 'temporarily closed'.
That temporary has turned into a permanence for the rest of this school year, but school pushes forward, even when we are away from our physical building. I've stayed connected through creative ways to engage them in learning - I currently have four newly hatched chickens in a brooder upstairs and am documenting the experience for our students.
I cannot wait to welcome my students back in the fall, even though it means they will be big 2nd graders! A few extra supplies and materials now would go a long way towards supporting their learning and positive experience at home now.
My Project
My students have been working incredibly hard during the remote learning period since they left our physical school. These supplies and materials will help them continue to be successful during this time. We've sent home many academic supplies, and I have a stack of books for each student in my class that they will be given to keep at home. The crayons, colored pencils, watercolor paints, and sketch pad will be used to help support specials learning while at home, and also allow students to express their creativity and feelings about home learning.
Each item will go to a student to help encourage them to 'push forward' in their learning, and to celebrate all they have already accomplished.
I have 19 students in my class, but many families have siblings in close grade levels - any 'extra' supplies will be given to the siblings of the students to ensure that there is enough for each family.
The math flash cards will be used to help practice addition and subtraction facts, the playdough will be used to practice building sight words and letters in creative ways, and the pencils will be given to students to ensure that every child has enough writing devices to be successful in their learning!
