I am proud to say that I teach young people that truly capture and embody the cultural, linguistic diversity of San Francisco. They are this city's humor, it's street culture, it's heart, it's vibrancy.
My students come from all walks of life, all kinds of families and households, all kinds of struggle.
I have students who came to this country by crossing a border on foot, while I also have students who are themselves parents by educators.
I teach 10th English, with some classes being inclusive of students with special education needs. I teach 11th American Literature within a social justice and leadership oriented pathway that has made great strides in local activism - for example contributing to the fight for Free Muni for Youth in SF which allows students under the age of 18 to ride the bus for free and not be criminalized for not being able to afford bus fare.
Many of my students honestly need school materials, extra food, and extra care. All the resources I am requesting help me and my colleagues do our jobs better and empower our students as young people in our community.
My Project
Our juniors and seniors in the Peers United for Leadership, Service, and Equity (PULSE) Pathway have been participating in Nonviolence Training workshops where they are learning about nonviolent communication skills as well as the history of nonviolence as a way to create positive socially just change in the world. We have been collaborating with the East Point Peace Academy based in Oakland, who teach in the tradition of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. all around the world.
These workshops have been incredible powerful these past 2 school years.
We feel so fortunate to be doing this work with these young people, who we trust to inherit the world after us. While we have done our own separate fundraising to host these workshops. It is in all honesty a adult-level course that is adapted for young people. So we would like to use these funds to provide supplies for all the group activities they will be doing, as well as provide some snacks and drinks to help keep them engaged for a prolonged seminar.
