This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a 99% low income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Regardless of the challenges that they are faced with each day they are worthy and deserving of a high quality and meaningful learning experience.
My students are energetic, creative and so spontaneous.
They love to read, write and problem solve. They love lots of positive attention. Many are raised in a single parent household and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I strive each and every day to keep my students growing both socially and academically. I may not be able to control their home lives but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I am hopeful to inspire my students to continue on a path to academic success.
My Project
Integrating writing into the math classroom is a way to deepen student learning and a tool for helping students gain new perspectives. The standard sized composition notebooks will be utilized as the students' math journals for their daily "Problem of the Day" which is a math word problem. The mini composition notebooks will be for the note-taking of math vocabulary terms. The students will create a math glossary in the mini composition notebooks.
As an educator, I have realized that writing during a math lesson is more than just a way to document information.
Writing in my math classroom will be a more engaging experience for my students. It will help my students to think more deeply and clearly about math. It will allow students to monitor and reflect upon their problem-solving processes.
