Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching middle school math in a neighborhood school in Chicago that is 94% low income students, and a 90% Latino population. I will be teaching an inquiry-based curriculum to help students develop real world problem solving skills through mathematical discourse. I want to create a multicultural and relevant curriculum to my students' lives in order to engage them in the material. Math education should be about and for the population of students I am serving.
The bright, curious, and enthusiastic group of 7th and 8th graders will be my first math community since graduating from my teaching program.
I want to start of the year strong with resources to help us succeed together.
My Project
I will be teaching at a low income school in Chicago so my students don't all have money for basic supplies like pencils, and notebooks. I want to have these supplies in my classroom on day one so we can start off strong!
Additionally, since around 30 percent of my school's population is English Language and/or Diverse Learners I want to have manipulatives to help teach and reinforce math concepts.
The math foam pattern blocks help teach geometry concepts visually and tactically. The dry erase number lines will help students with negative and positive numbers on their own desk. Also, since I want to encourage sharing ideas, students will need dry erase markers to show their work on different parts of the white board in the classroom.
This list is just the start but will help my class run more smoothly for my new students!
