Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At heart, my students are just like middle schoolers anywhere in America. They want to fit in. They want to have friends. They want to be able to express their identities. They are excited about learning, but complain about homework. They want to succeed.
And yet, my students struggle with issues that many other students their age do not.
Roughly half of them are English Learners, whether they were born in the U.S. or they have just moved here. Nearly 90% of them live in poverty. They experience racism and classism far too often, and are grossly underestimated by many members of the surrounding community.
My Project
Currently, my classroom is not optimally arranged. The projector has to be in the middle of the room, which means some students sit behind me. Other students have a hard time maintaining their focus. We end up wasting a lot of time that could be spent learning.
These materials will help to rearrange our classroom to make it more suitable for learning.
The printer carts will allow me to relocate my projector, document camera, laptop, and printer. This will allow me to move my teaching table to a corner. I will be able to refocus students who are easily distracted. Student learning will increase exponentially!
I have also requested some basic supplies, such as printer ink, glue sticks, and permanent markers. I had thought my classroom was well-stocked, but the beginning of the school year proved otherwise! These supplies will help my classroom function much better as we won’t have to waste time searching for supplies. Finally, the wireless karaoke microphone will help students project their voices when participating in class so that I can hear them more easily.
