Do you remember the feeling of getting lost in book or entire series for the very first time?
My students are from a high-needs, low-income neighborhood in New York and need your help to LOVE reading through engaging, new series!
Many students come from difficult home lives or domestic violence shelters.
Other students are new to the country and come from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and West Africa.
Due to all these difficult factors put up against them and their families, many students struggle to focus and progress in school. These children come from difficult backgrounds, which means that their families are unable to afford basic school supplies, books and lunches.
Most students aren't used to the daily bedtime stories or taken to the library, so they need your help!
My Project
Our class is requesting sets of their favorite series books such as "Katie Woo", "Mercy Watson", "Stink", and their ultimate favorite- "Fly Guy". These are new series books that keep my kids laughing and engaged as they read.
Additionally, we are requesting post its and pens for students to have fun jotting down their thinking as they read so they can share their thoughts with their partners and classmates.
With your help, you can help my 2nd graders fall in love with reading and build important comprehension skills and stamina to prepare for 3rd grade.
Most importantly, you will be giving them memories of getting lost in a book/series of their favorite characters.
The more they get to know and love characters, the more they will want to read, read, read every book in the series! This will help my students become life-long lovers of reading and make them successful in the 2nd grade and the future
