We are located in a neighborhood with a predominantly lower middle class, culturally diverse population. Our school’s diversity includes a fairly large ELL population. Of our population just under 28% of our students are identified as white or caucasian. The next most common ethnicities are two or more races with 18%, Asian or Pacific Islander with 19%, Hispanic with 18%, and Alaska Native/American Indian and African American make up the remainder of the school population. (ASD Ethnicity Report, Oct 2016) We have an active Alaskan Native community and the support of a Title VII teacher. Our diversity is a large part of who we are as a community.
I am super excited that my students will soon be returning to school for face to face instruction, yet many of them will not be able to acquire the basic supplies that they need to take part in learning activities.
Many of our families are facing financial hardships right now. Receiving assistance in the form of school supplies would mean the world to my families.
My Project
As we head back to school for face to face learning, teachers are rethinking how classroom space and materials are used. Just a few examples include practicing social distancing, showing learning in new ways, and using individual materials rather than shared materials. Elementary classrooms have always been tight-knit communities that promote teamwork, sharing, and mutual encouragement. Distance learning has left many students feeling left out and abandoned.
By donating to our project, you will ensure that my students have the ability to come to school ready to learn no matter what their family situation may be.
Many of my students do not have the means to buy basic supplies, like pencils, erasers, or crayons. At this time, classrooms need additional supplies to ensure student safety, for example personal bins where students can store their own supplies. They also need materials, like white boards, in order to share ideas and learning while staying socially distant. Without these supplies, students will not be able to take part in their own learning. All students deserve to receive the supplies and support they need to grow their minds.
