First graders often come to school brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends, and interests. Theirs is an age commonly marked by tremendous growth, lost teeth, great emotional highs and less frequently some lows. First graders make big plans, jump into projects with both feet, work at a fast pace and don't want to miss a thing.
Our classroom is a family!
Our school is located on a Native American Reservation. Most of my students have had significant trauma in their lives. I work very hard to create a classroom where the students feel safe and loved!
My Project
Many times the students go to grab markers, whiteboards, erasers, chapter books and so on and we never have a full set of any of these materials. I then have to go out that night and buy the supplies myself. Which, I do not mind doing but since I have recently learned about Donors Choose this allows another resource to look at to help accommodate the growing needs of a classroom. Teachers all around the world spend money to furnish their classrooms so the classroom has what it needs.
First graders are hands on learners so they need to be writing, reading, using manipulatives all the time in order to learn.
This enables the learning target being taught to be one that they will learn and will stick in order to be carried over into the next step of learning, There are several studies, especially among native american students, that support hands on learning being the best way to learn. Having the whiteboards, student markers, and chapter books will help this.
