This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a city that is thriving, but they don't always feel that they are part of that success or able to access it. What they know is that they live in a neighborhood that is changing due to development and gentrification and that other parts of the city celebrate these changes while not acknowledging the impact it has on our students' lives. Too often, these changes are pushing their friends and families out because of rising rent and home prices instead of giving them access to services and opportunities they were long denied.

My students live in a city of opportunity but are denied many of those opportunities everyday.

My job is to make sure that they have the same opportunities in my classroom that students in West Austin have. My students work hard and they are eager to explore, to discover and learn. I work hard to teach them not only academics, but the importance of self-advocacy and determination.

My Project

This project is a grab bag. We desperately snacks for the kids, especially in the mid afternoon and we have been buying these all year our of pay checks. The kids truly get hungry. It's no joke. We've bee engaged in a weird back and forth with our school over paper towels for our science classrooms and we've taken to "stealing" them out of break rooms. Enough is enough. We also need batteries, fish food for our aquarium, glue sticks (we run through these constantly), and fidget toys, especially for our special needs students.
