My students are engaged and thoughtful learners. 15% of my students are either English Language Learners or come from homes where English is not the dominant language. 18% of our students receive Special Education services, and 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school is in South Philadelphia serving a racially diverse population.
My school is a Title 1 school indicating that most of my students are living in poverty in our city.
Many of my students come from homes where their parents work 2-3 jobs or work every day of the week and late hours. Having said this, my students are eager to learn and work hard to achieve their goals.
Our school is dedicated to ensuring that all students learn through direct instruction, independent practice, and group projects. We strive to create a safe and creative environment that extends into our community. My school provides students in grades K-8 with an exemplary education, setting students up for success in the future.
My Project
We use chart paper, copy paper, sticky notes, and pencils daily in our writing and reading classes. These tools allow for clearer instruction, continued access to important skills and strategies for strong reading and writing, and opportunities for independent thought and learning.
Your generosity will contribute directly to my students' skill-building and critical thinking.
I use chart paper to highlight key takeaways from our daily lessons, and then hang them as posters on the wall so students can refer back to them and build their skills as they progress through a unit. My students use sticky notes to write down their thoughts as they read, stretching themselves to notice small details in a text and think about why the author included them and how it impacts the reader's interpretation. Pencils and paper (used for handouts and worksheets) are used often by my enthusiastic writers and help them access the material and engage with it themselves. These materials are all staples of productive, meaningful learning in our class!
