My Students

Our school serves a low income rural area. The largest employer in our county is the school district. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds--Latino, Asian, African-American, Pacific Islands, Greek. I am also the out class for the social emotional behavior academy for second grade.

Covid has made it difficult for them to express themselves and develop age-appropriate social skills.

They have various degrees of anxiety and anger management challenges.

My Project

These items are needed because supplies cannot be shared. These are basic classroom supplies that are used daily.

Publishing their own books with the paper, crayons, tape and staples/stapler will allow my students to develop social skills through writing about their experiences and imagining new ones.

They have many feelings that have not been discussed or validated. Through their own journaling and story writing they can examine different ways to express and cope with the challenges they face. In addition, student published materials will encourage more reading because they will want to read their classmates' adventures.
