In middle school, students begin thinking about college. Academics at an International Baccalaureate school must be kept rigorous for all students. As an educator with several postsecondary degrees, I have experienced the demands of college and university courses and the depth of knowledge required to be successful. I often discuss college and post-high school plans with students so they maintain focus on their goals.
Currently, 70% of students in my school are eligible for free and reduced-priced lunches; in addition, 10% of students are English language learners, striving to overcome academic and social barriers to achieve academic success.
I have seen firsthand that students are determined to overcome these barriers!
My current position as a Middle School Reading Teacher allows me to work with 90 students in grades 5-8 who come from a variety of backgrounds.
One of the building goals to support academic achievement is the purposeful use of AVID strategies (Advancement via Individual Determination) in all classrooms. I am eager to have students engage in productive literacy activities (speaking and writing) while also practicing soft skills (communicating and collaborating) with their peers.
My Project
This project includes classroom supplies to be used with my middle school (grades 5-8) students in reading class. To start, the sticky chart paper will allow me to draw visual graphic organizers of the curriculum reading which can then be hung up on the whiteboard, or concrete wall, for the duration of the unit. Students can also use the sticky chart paper to collaborate on a project to present to the class. Secondly, a classroom set of whiteboards are also included in this project that will allow for individual, partner, or group checking for understanding. I also envision using these boards with teams of students playing review games like Jeopardy.
These classroom supplies will enable my students to be prepared to participate and engage in authentic learning for long-term academic and career success.
Lastly, the lined sticky notes and felt-tip markers will deepen student learning by allowing for artistic creativity during reading. I recently learned of a strategy called "sketchnoting" in which students sketch visual representations (in color) with their notes. This engages their whole brain for deeper understanding. The great thing is, sketchnoting can be done with any text, including novels, fiction, non-fiction; academic and enjoyment reading. The lined sticky notes will allow students to combine sketchnoting with AVID's Chunking the Text strategy, summarizing each paragraph in words and visuals.
I am excited to start a new school year with high-engagement strategies to guide my students to academic and career success!
