Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an exceptional program that begins in middle school and is designed to help students accomplish their dream of successfully attending a four-year college or university. AVID provides students with the skills they need to be successful in middle school and high school and the tools, guidance and courses necessary for college acceptance. Over the years, AVID seniors from the district's high schools have achieved an amazing 98% four-year college acceptance rate which far exceeds the national college acceptance rate of 36%. The AVID program gives day-to-day mentoring help, creates a vision of college as attainable, and provides guidance in how to negotiate the college preparatory system. AVID places students with a strong group of peers and adults who share a commitment to academic achievement. Ultimately, AVID provides structure and a sense of family to support students as they take on the academic challenges necessary to achieve their goal of acceptance to a four-year college or university. With your help, we can support our diverse students who prepare for college, career, and civic life in the 21st century.
My Project
The AVID binder is a required organizational tool to help students maintain notes and school work in one place. Students are expected to maintain their binder, which includes labeled dividers for each course, notebook paper for focused notes, and a supply pouch with writing utensils including dry erase markers which are used during tutorials. They are expected to keep their binder organized using the AVID methods they have been taught. In order for students to meet the expectations of this rigorous program, they need the necessary tools. Unfortunately these back-to-school items exceed students’ budgets; however this challenge is our opportunity to support students who are determined to succeed.
