Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of working with amazing 1st-grade scholars. I work in an integrated co-taught setting, therefore, there are about 27 students, 1 special educator, 1 general educator, and possibly 1 teaching assistant present in our classroom. About 1/4 of our class receives special education services, and about 1/4 of our students receive ENL support. Our classroom is very busy and students are often moving about, in and out of the classroom.
My students live in an urban community and many face hardships outside of school.
My students encounter academic and behavioral challenges due to their disabilities and/or their adverse childhood experiences. My mission is to provide my students with as much support and love as I can in order for them to achieve and be successful.
My Project
In this project, I have included different items that will support my students all year long.
The flexible seating choices (mat & cushion) will serve as a place for students to engage in independent or partner reading.
It is important that we create a space where students can fully indulge in reading and feel motivated to read. Allowing students to choose where they sit to read and offering alternative seating will help create excitement and motivation to read. and One of the most important things we can give to our first graders is a strong foundation of positive reading behaviors.
The other materials include supplies that I can use to support my students such as dice, a math game, and alphabet foam. I can use these items during centers or small group instruction to keep my students engaged while practicing core skills. For example, the alphabet foam can be utilized for my group of Pre A readers who are still learning letter recognition and letter sounds. The sentence strip pockets, tabletop display chart, and magnetic hooks will allow me to display anchor charts and visuals that will help support students while they are working (without having to rely on the teacher!).
