Supplemental Supplies for AP Psychology and Student Wellness!
Help me give my students pens, pencils, binders, scissors, an iPad, a Nose model, swim caps, perception eyeglasses, balloons, plastic bins, Purell, water bottles, and hygienic supplies.
My students are a rainbow of cultural and socioeconomic diversity in a rich urban environment. They are both artistically and academically motivated in their learning as they attend an arts/performing arts high school in which they have specific majors of study in the arts. They are also college-oriented and choose rigorous preparatory coursework such as College Board-level Advanced Placement classes. They also enjoy expressing their knowledge and their art through classroom discussions and debates, group work, and hands-on experiments and projects.
My Project
My students need pens, pencils, computer labels, legal-sized paper, scissors, folders, binders, plastic storage bins, baggies to help keep themselves organized and on task without the stress that comes when these much-needed items are forgotten at home or in a locker. Students who are from low-income families will be able to utilize these supplies in a way that levels the playing field without the stigma of having less than the other students who have greater privilege.
Other supplies such as Purell hand sanitizer, water bottles, and sanitary napkins are for helping students with their overall self-help, hygiene, and wellness.
A healthy child, who is also mindful of their health, is a child who is able to learn and be engaged in the learning process without the stress and worry of having to meet their basic survival needs.
Some other resources my students and I need are:
- a nose model to learn about the sense of olfaction in our sensation and perception unit;
- an iPad with a protective case for taking accurate online attendance, for utilization of an online gradebook through IO Classroom, and for utilization of an online course webpage through Google Classroom for classroom assignments and important announcements;
- psychology books such as Even The Rat Was White, Breathing Race Into The Machine, and Mothers of the Military will be used to teach equity and incorporate representation of all cultures into the psychology curriculum;
- stickers for positive reinforcement on highly effective assignments, swim caps for drawing and label parts of the brain for the Biological Bases of Behavior unit,
- balloons for creating stress balls during the Stress and Health unit,
- & perception eyeglasses for visual illusions during the Sensation and Perception unit, as well as other fun and exciting classroom interactive and group experiences.
