Supplemental Materials to Expand Learning Opportunities
My students need a class set of 28 KINGSO recorders to learn some musical basics since they have not had music as a class since they began school. They also need 13 chess sets for our impromptu chess lessons.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a racially diverse neighborhood in Northeast Portland. It's residences consist of large apartment complexes, trailer parks and single family homes. Unfortunately, in the last several years as housing prices have gone up, so have rents, driving some families out of their homes. Members of my school community work hard to fight such injustices.
My third graders reflect the neighborhood they live in and come from a variety of backgrounds and are all proudly bilingual.
They have been studying English and Spanish since kindergarten and most communicate effectively in both. Many come from very low income households. They are hard workers who are extremely conscientious in their care of others. They deserve a high quality education.
My Project
My students need a class set of 28 KINGSO recorders to learn some musical basics since they have not had music as a class since they began school. They also need 13 chess sets for our impromptu chess lessons. My students have not had access to a music education since they began school and yet many of them express a particular passion and interest in music. I know that in other public schools nation-wide third graders learn to read rudimentary music and to play a handful of songs on recorders. I would like to give my students the same opportunities as their higher-income peers and begin teaching music 1-2 per week.
In addition to the recorders, I am requesting chess sets which I intend to use to teach chess once per week if not more during recess or perhaps before school.
As a lover of Chess, I believe that it teaches perseverance, patience, grace and the ability to plan something a bit in advance--all skills that my students in particular could benefit from. What's more is this year many students in my class have expressed a desire to become (better) chess players. In the past, I have taught a handful of students with the random sets and pieces and it was particularly thrilling to see Special Ed students thrive at Chess.
Please consider funding my project to give my students more exposure to different activities. They deserve it!
