My Students

Third grade is a giant step away from K-2. Students are moving away from learning to read to reading to learn. We, as teachers, still guide them closely, but our goal is to have students work independently. Having grade-level appropriate, standards-based books to read to students and for students to read is so important. These students may not have the money to have books at home nor the means to get to the public library. It's my job to provide a variety of reading material.

My elementary believes "Every Child, Every Day".

We strive each day to meet the diverse needs of our students through effective teaching practices to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. A majority of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Over half of our students qualify for the national school lunch program, which means the family income must be below 130% of the poverty line.

My Project

Instead of standing up in front of the class and lecturing about grammar rules and telling students, “It’s just the way it is” in reference to memorizing grammar rules, you can stand up in front of the class and say, “Let’s look at what R.J. Palacio, Kate DiCamillo, or Lois Lowry does in this sentence.”

Through mentor sentences, you can intrigue students and subconsciously get them interested in books.

A single sentence can cause students to wonder and predict what it means in the context of a story. They can also expose students to quality writing and inspire them to try out techniques used by their favorite authors in their writing.

On Monday we read the book. What do you notice about this sentence? They might see exciting words, figurative language, punctuation, or different parts of speech. On Tuesday we rewrite the mentor sentence exactly as it is and we identify the different parts of speech. On Wednesday we revise the mentor sentence by making it more descriptive or exciting, but we keep the meaning the same! By Thursday we are ready to imitate the mentor sentence by keeping the style and structure the same but making it their own. This will be a whole new sentence. On Friday we reread the text, noticing other sentences that might have the same qualities and we apply them to our own writing!
