This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a group of 25 highly motivated second graders who are eager to learn and explore. They live in a very dangerous blight-filled city where high crime and high poverty have been the norm for more than a decade. Most of them come from single-parent households and many have experienced homelessness; however, they are high-spirited and excited about learning. My class is one of the largest class in the building and has the highest attendance rates in the school. Rarely is anyone absent because they are passionate about learning.
Puppet shows, songs, dancing and rapping are often incorporated into varied areas of instruction.
Our classroom is never boring and my students are always ready to learn. Their enthusiasm is contagious. Smiles and laughter greet me in the morning and close out my afternoons. It is a pleasure to teach such an awesome group of students. Truly they are my inspiration.
My Project
We need a pencil sharpener, pencils, crayons, school supplies, snacks and a classroom upgrade to help us stay focused and continue with on track learning. My students need to know that if they need basic supplies, like a pencil, they can easily find and get one so little to no instructional time is lost on trying to locate a pencil or other supplies. They also need snacks so they are not hungry and can focus on their work. Our classroom has torn paper on bulletin boards and overused borders. The theme in our room has been Superheroes and I would like to continue this theme; however, an upgrade is needed. I created superhero capes for all of my students and they are very proud of them. I promise to post a picture of my class in their capes if this project is funded!!
Having school supplies, and keeping our classroom attractive and inviting, adds a special touch and incentive to all students.
The climate is aided by visual surroundings that inspire and motivate. While it may seem minimal, it has been very helpful and encouraging to those who may have housing or other social issues. All of these things assist students in being on task, focused, and read-to- learn without interruption. These materials will greatly heighten their sense of respect and responsibility for their own property as well as others.
