Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my class are very intrigued by the world around them and desire to learn more about environmental sciences. Funding this project would feed their natural curiosity by teaching them about Earth's natural resources and why it is important to protect them from further harm.
Our school is located in a large urban district in Illinois.
We are a bilingual school and more than half of our students are English Language Learners. The majority of the students are low-income and have very little access to books and other educational resources at home. By having hands on experience with science, the students in my class who are still transitioning into English will be able to understand the science concepts as well as adding to their academic vocabulary. The materials and resources provided by this grant would help to deepen my student's understanding of environmental science. Our school has an environmental club, but it is only for older students. The materials being requested in this grant would help my students to understand more about the environmental sciences so that when they are old enough to join this club, they will already have a strong understanding of the importance of conserving Earth's resources.
My Project
Our school does not have a set Science curriculum so the non-fiction books being requested will help students read about environmental science. In the younger grades, we do not have Science textbooks or materials so the games and resources in this project will give students hands on experience with the scientific method. The upper grades Science teacher reports that many students arrive in 6th grade and know very little about Science. If our students had these resources and activities, they would build a solid foundation of scientific knowledge. Because many of the students at our school are academically behind their peers at other schools across the state and country, it is very important that our school focuses on helping them to improve in all content areas. Part of this grant is requesting books that can help to improve both their reading comprehension skills as well as teaching them important scientific information as well as learning science-related vocabulary.
My students are very serious about saving the environment.
However, before they can save it, they must learn to understand it and know more about science. The resources being requested for this project would enable my class to have hands-on experiences and build a firm foundation of scientific knowledge so that they truly can become superheroes and help to save the environment as well as becoming advocates for change in both their homes and in our school.
