We are in an urban school in Massachusetts.
We have students from all over the world! There are eight students who speak another language at home. My students are fantastic and excited about learning! When I finish reading a book, they all clap. When we are walking to lunch, they ask if we are going to read 'that' book again. When they come in the morning, they can't wait to choose a new book to take home. They love reading a lot! They are also all smiles when the world around them may be tough. Reading is a way for their imaginations to take them anywhere they would like to go. They also have a solid understanding that reading and success in school will lead them to college.
My Project
Unfortunately, all of our readers are not reading on a second grade level. Therefore they cannot access content on their own. While a reader on level may be learning about the saguaro cactus that grows in the forbidding arid desert, a student reading below grade level may be reading that the desert is dry. The gap continues to widen because these readers aren't building background knowledge on their own! A listening center (CD player with headphones for a small group of children) will allow students to hear texts while they follow along. They will listen to books about different animals, planets, people, and different fictional situations. Building their background knowledge will prepare them for subjects that they don't get exposed to at home. This listening center will also help build fluency with rhyming books the children can follow along with. Either way, the more books you read/hear, the smarter you get!
