Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My self-contained classroom is comprised of students with multiple disabilities and English Language Learners as well as students with behavioral needs. My school is located in a low-income, high-need area. My sixth and seventh-grade students come to school each day ready and willing to learn.
My students are excited to come to science class, but are unable to complete experiments due to the availability of resources.
Our science department does an incredible job providing us with higher level resources, like microscopes, microscope slides, rock and mineral identification kits, etc., but we often are missing basic materials needed for science class. Our science department shares the resources we have, which makes scheduling experiments troublesome. We are looking for donations to purchase rulers, stopwatches, thermometers, jars with lids, calculators, graduated cylinders, and scissors. Our class thanks you!
My Project
Having a class set of materials eliminates the need to schedule experiments. My class would be able to do experiments more frequently if we had our own class set! Rather than coordinate with the other members of the science department, experiments could be laced through the curriculum whenever a hands-on learning experience would fit!
My students would benefit from more frequent hands-on applications of science!
My class is comprised of diverse learners who enjoy movement and manipulatives. The use of materials like rulers, stopwatch/timers, graduated cylinders, rulers, calculators, and scissors will allow my students to participate in experiments they otherwise would not have access to.
