Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Home is where the heart is. My school feels like home for so many of my students because it is a place where nourishing minds goes hand in hand with nurturing hearts. A Title I low-income school in the Gulf Coast region, a significant portion of my students come from families who lack financial resources- a situation exacerbated by Hurricane Harvey's destruction in the neighborhood surrounding the school.
For children to learn, they must first feel loved.
My students have a curious spark for knowledge, but they also want to belong and feel like they fit in. Many of these children have big hearts but struggle to positively connect to those around them, so the principles of kindness and respect are cornerstones of my classroom. Despite socioeconomic disadvantages, the 675 students I teach are the most genuinely loving and resilient people I have ever met.
My Project
Music classrooms are wide open spaces that accommodate creativity and exploration of sound and movement. Still, every student needs a spot they can call their own during whole-group instruction. My classroom has a hard vinyl floor that makes it difficult to mark spots for students to sit- tape and other adhesives are easily damaged and destroyed during movement activities, and any sort of movable marking materials aren't ideal for consistent seating arrangements.
The Flex-Space "A Place for Everyone" carpet will provide a comfortable learning environment for each student in my classroom.
Clearly marked boxes on the carpet reinforce how we create and respect each others' personal space, while the color-coded rows help younger children quickly find their spot. Along with those practical benefits, many of my students have been letting me know that they want a more comfortable place to sit during whole-group instruction and while playing instruments. Cold, hard vinyl floors can get uncomfortable very quickly, and my students would be very excited to each have a warm and comfortable square that they can call their own.
