Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the teacher of 20 smart, kind, and curious kindergarteners. We are a part of a public magnet school for world language with a unique approach. Not only do we have language class every day, but students are also exposed to a curriculum centered around global citizenship. It is never too early to learn about global citizenship and what it means to live in this changing world.
Despite 92% of our students living in low income households, my scholars come to school every day ready to learn and eager for any opportunity that comes their way.
We especially love reading, playing outside, and our class mascot (Mr. Banana the stuffed monkey). Most of all, we love working together in our diverse classroom where everyone adds value to our community.
My Project
If you ask any child in my class, they will say their favorite part of our classroom is the library. Our library has a comfy green rug, some cozy seats, and hundreds of books to choose from. A new addition to our classroom library is cardboard personal book boxes where each child gets to choose books that they are interested in and that they can read independently. Nothing is more exciting than having a set of books that is just for you. For many of my students, these are the only books that they can call their own. My next step is transporting these precious books from the classroom to home.
Best-Buy-Tote-Bags will allow the learning we do at school to travel home with my students every week.
Students will get to share school books with their families and even bring books from home to school. When they have practiced a book at school and at home, they will display their book on the Magnetic Display Shelves and share it during small group or whole group time.
A main factor in a child's educational success is the communication between home and school. I am hoping that this new and proven system bridges the gap and allows my scholars to continue learning and reading anywhere they go.
